Through all of my years in web and app development, I’ve seen so many tech companies fail for reasons that could have been easily overcome or never faced. I think it’s finally time someone stepped up and told the start-up companies of the world how not to fail.
In the creative industry, you, as a entrepreneur, freelancer, or business owner are well aware of the challenges you face getting your company off the ground. Building a scope of work, project managing, making ends meet, and building a client base are just a few of the issues that arise.
So, I’m going to take it back to the basics for a moment.
As a entrepreneur, there are key issues that must be handled before you can even dream of getting your project up and running.
So before you focus too long on the big picture, take a look at the details.
Of course the big picture is important. It’s what got you here in the first place. You had an idea, saw a potential, wanted to fill a gap in the industry and went for it.
But take a step back and think for a second.
What are you overlooking? How are you actually going to execute your plan?
Remember, you’re building a business. Sure, you’re building an app and creating software, but at the core, you’re building a business.
Consider these few questions:
- How will you reach your market?
- What is your marketing budget?
- Who is going to keep up with maintenance?
- How will you boost sales and market your product?
- How much insurance do you need? (Because believe me, you need it).
- How much will the initial buildout cost?
- How much is upkeep?
- How do you budget for fixing the inevitable bugs that pop up?
And that only scratches the surface of what you need to consider before diving into a big project.
So that’s why I’m here. With over 20 years of experience in the industry, I’ve gained a bit of insight into what goes into building your business. I know what questions to ask, what details to focus on, and what needs to get done.
So why am I doing this?
Here’s the short and sweet bullet point version:
- I’ve seen enough companies fail over the years that I know how to NOT set yourself up for failure.
- I get bored easily, so a start-up company is the perfect challenge.
- I like to travel and it’s a lot easier to have people pay you to travel than to pay for it yourself.
- I’ve got 20 years of experience under my belt, so I just might know what I’m doing.
- And I like to tell jokes and hear people laugh.
Basically, I want to share what I know with those of you who may be venturing out on a new project. Take it from me, you don’t want to learn all of this the hard way. Learn a bit from others’ experience, failure, and expertise.
